The Black Grizzly of Whiskey Creek was a joint winner, along with Robert Macfarlane's book Wild Places, of the 2008 Grand Prize at the Banff Festival of Mountain Books. Black Grizzly  also won the Canadian Rockies Award.  The grand prize is chosen by an international jury while the Rockies award is decided by a jury of Alberta residents.

In November 2009, I was very honoured to be awarded  the Banff Mountain Festival's Summit of Excellence award for distinguished achievement.

Also in 2009, Mount Royal University awarded me the Legacy Award for distinguished achievement.
